Athletics play an important role in the college experience. At Buffalo State, the student athletic fee increases stability in the funding of the intercollegiate athletics program, which provides eight men's varsity sports teams, ten women's varsity sports teams, intramurals and recreational programs. Buffalo State competes at the NCAA Division III level and is associated with the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) as well as the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC).
The SUNY policy on intercollegiate athletics governs funding of intercollegiate athletics programs, and the SUNY policy on fees, rentals and other charges authorizes use of the athletics fee. Buffalo State's Intercollegiate Athletics Board (IAB) monitors, reviews and recommends policy for campus intercollegiate athletics programs.
